Voices of Creatives: Scenarios for the New Normal in the Creative Industries of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East after Covid-19

The report contains six in-depth country profiles, where specific data and strategic analyses help present the voiced concerns and hopes of stakeholders on the ground. The country profiles are followed by extensive recommendations for Covid-19 response actions organized around the themes of Space, Community, Training and Funding. Both chapters give attention to non-Western expertise on the cultural and creative industries’ needs as well as their stakeholders’ aspirations for development and, thus, broaden the perspectives for more effective and holistic problem solving.

Cultural and Creative Industries: A supra-regional project implemented by GIZ and Goethe-Institut

The cultural and creative industries are among the most rapidly growing economic sectors. They generate almost 50 million jobs worldwide and offer employment for women and youth. Apart from their economic value, CCIs create identity, bring people into dialogue, and contribute to democracy. To nurture this potential, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched a supra-regional project that focuses on cultural and creative work as a vehicle for sustainable development.

Cultural and Creative Industries: Strengthening the Economic and Social Participation of Women - Promoting a Future Oriented Industry

Since 2018, the German Federal Ministry for  Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has been promoting the sector cultural and creative industries (CCI) through its implementing organisations Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale  Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Goethe-Institut. This future oriented sector offers important levers for the implementation of a feminist development policy, which is a priority of the BMZ. Almost half of employees in the CCI sector are women but they often work under precarious conditions.

Skills for Reintegration : Target-Group-Specific Approaches to Reintegration for Education and Technical Vocational Education and Training in Fragile and Conflict-Affected Contexts

This study reviews sector concepts, strategies and approaches for reintegration. With the overview of existing instruments and methods, it aims to strengthen practical development support for countries and communities facing reintegration challenges. It argues that the successful reintegration of displaced populations forms a key element in post-conflict recovery, reconstruction and peacebuilding situations and that within the reintegration context, education and TVET are cornerstones and key sectors in rebuilding societies and sustaining peace.

The effects of the digital transformation on technical and vocational education and training and the labour market : A comparison of six international studies

The emergence of the platform or gig economy is a major trend. These changes will affect the organisation of employment relationships, job profiles and the requisite skills. This paper analyses six studies that have addressed these issues, while focusing on aspects with a bearing on TVET.

Job Creation for Africa’s Youth : Are there Pathways in Agricultural Value Chains?

This policy brief highlights the main results from a GIZ-supported study of the evolving employment dynamics in SSA’s agricultural value chains by Michigan State University. Three main pathways are described that provide job opportunities in agricultural value chains and in the non-farm sectors. Further, the study summarises key entry points for investment and policy actions to promote inclusive, competitive and productive agri-food systems generating employment opportunities and contributing to economic growth and transformation.

What Works In Rural Youth Employment Promotion?

Every year, 25 million young people in Africa enter the labor market, more than half of them (14 million) in rural areas. By the year 2030, 320 million new jobs will need to be created, which makes Rural Youth Employment one of the most pressing and challenging topics, but also presents an enormous opportunity for economic development in capitalizing on this “youth dividend”. This report aims at highlighting good practices and lessons from GIZ programs on rural youth employment.

TVET for a Green Economy

The report recommends improving the coherence between national sustainability strategies and policies and TVET by developing green vocational training strategies and increasing the private sector's participation within this process. Furthermore, environmental protection, resource efficiency, and renewable energies should be anchored in curricula on the level of vocational training and continuing education, supporting the process with human resource measurements and greening TVET institutions.

VET Toolbox

The VET Toolbox supports countries by strengthening their capacity to implement VET and labor market reforms that enhance labor market relevance and employability for all, particularly by: applying evidence-based VET and labor market programming; operationalizing private sector involvement in VET and labor market activities, and, enhancing the inclusion of vulnerable groups in VET and formal and informal labor market activities. The VET Toolbox is a multi-partner project between Enabel, LuxDev, British Council, GIZ, and AFD.
