Approaches to increasing employment and quality of employment among youth with disabilities.

The objective of this report is to provide an understanding of the context, barriers, and practices related to approaches that increase employment and quality of employment among youth with disabilities, primarily in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This report largely draws on existing literature, activity reports, and consultations with practitioners and individuals with disabilities.

Inclusive Digital Employment Activitiy (IDEA) Landscape Review: Barriers and opportunities for the inclusive employment of youth with disabilities

The Report explores the challenges of youth unemployment for people with disabilities in South Africa. The high rate of youth unemployment is highlighted, despite employers reporting unfilled vacancies. The social model of disability is used to frame the analysis, arguing societal barriers are the main obstacle. These barriers include inaccessible workplaces and a lack of accessible education, significantly disadvantaging young people with disabilities. The report acknowledges employer challenges in finding qualified candidates.

Key soft skills for cross-sectoral youth outcomes

Despite growing interest in this topic, however, there is no clear consensus about which soft skills are likely to produce the most significant benefit to youth and to what extent these skills are similar or different across key outcome areas. This report identifies the core soft skills that would create positive outcomes across important areas of youth’s lives, including workforce success, violence prevention, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH).

The Toolkit is organized to inform users how to monitor development interventions. It begins with a focus on monitoring within USAID’s Program Cycle but expands to provide more general information and best practices in the field of monitoring.
