This book talks about Africa's massive informal economy, the main source of jobs in the region, is expected to keep growing. Despite its established presence, challenges abound. Low productivity, limited resources, and vulnerability to shocks plague this sector. Informal workers, especially women, often lack access to social safety nets and financial tools. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed these vulnerabilities, prompting governments to utilize technology and innovation to deliver social protection programs and support economic recovery, particularly in urban areas.

This project, represented by the eleven studies discussed in this volume, set out to explore two broad questions: What are the experiences of individual workers and sellers as they rely on platforms to earn a living? What are the opportunities improve those experiences?

This book offers insights into how public employment services can respond to the imminent challenges society and governments face in the rapidly changing world of work.

As of 2020, the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS) makes use of algorithmic profiling of job seekers to increase the efficiency of its counseling process and the effectiveness of active labor market programs. In this paper, an in-depth analysis of relevant technical documentation and policy documents investigates crucial conceptual, technical, and social implications of the system. 

What are search frictions? What role do they play in the analysis of markets? Why are they important? This paper answers these questions, providing context for issues related to job hunting and matching platforms.

Their headline estimate is that there are 163 million freelancer profiles registered on online labour platforms globally.

The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting people everywhere, and the culture sector has in many ways come to a standstill – cultural events, cinema, theatre and music performances have been cancelled, international tourism has largely ceased, restaurants and markets have closed, amongst others.
